About Us

The Center for Educational Design and Research, or CEDAR, was established by teachers and parents who believe in and focus on promoting reading as a great way to learn a second language. With contributions from teachers and professors from China, the USA, the UK, and Ireland, C has created a variety of courses to emphasize the importance of reading in the learning journey and help students develop essential literacy and critical thinking skills. Reading materials are selected from language arts and literature courses in mainstream American schools, and the LEXILE standard is used to measure the growth of students’ reading and language abilities. We offer nearly ten thousand printed books and e-books as reading resources for students to explore.

Our History

In 2015, we offered semester-long experimental courses in several schools: a course for 5th graders at Langya Road Primary School, a course for 7th graders at Nanjing Foreigner Language School, a course for 10th graders at Nanjing No. 1 High School in 10th grade, and a course for college sophomores at Nanjing Normal University. After receiving positive feedback from these schools, we started to offer extracurricular classes to students from a variety of schools and backgrounds. More than 400 students have participated in our courses since then; their positive experiences and successes have earned us recognition as a reputable ELL organization.

MY INTRODUCTION

I am a zealous reader from Everyday Reading. This summer, I took the of “Reading Strategies & Critical Analyzing”. There are three books carefully chosen by Everyday Reading: Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, Terry Pratchett's Mort and Homer's Odyssey. Although I have just finished two of them, I am convinced that the selection is meaningful and helpful. The two books demonstrate different styles with profundity and humor respectively. In Fahrenheit 451, there is the respect of books and knowledge; in Mort, the respect of humor. Nevertheless, these two books have something important in common: they are both good choices for meaningful reading and profound thinking in English.

I enjoyed challenging myself with the questions the teacher offered us for in-depth comprehension of these two books. Every question led me to another round of re-reading and sometimes meditation. The whole process of being asked questions about what I have read provides a journey for me to explore a new world.
